Farm Mechanisation Financing Programme
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a historic initiative to transform agriculture in the province. The High-Tech Farm Mechanisation Financing Programme aims to empower farmers by providing access to state-of-the-art agricultural machinery through interest-free loans of up to Rs 30 million.
This initiative has been welcomed as a game-changer for Punjab’s agricultural economy, promising higher crop yields, reduced wastage, and an overall modernization of farming practices.
A Major Step Toward Modern Agriculture
For decades, farmers in Punjab relied on traditional farming tools and outdated machinery. As a result, productivity remained stagnant while labor costs continued to rise. The new programme introduces 12 categories of advanced machinery, including combine harvesters, rice planters, wheat straw balers, maize dryers, orchard sprayers, and silage harvesters.
The Punjab government believes that access to this equipment will reduce manual labor, improve efficiency, and help small and large farmers alike.
How the Programme Works
The government has structured the programme to ensure maximum accessibility:
- Loan Limit: Up to Rs 30 million per farmer, service provider, or agri-company.
- Interest Rate: Zero – the loan is entirely interest-free.
- Grace Period: Six months before repayment begins.
- Repayment Plan: Spread over five years, in quarterly installments.
- Application: Farmers will be able to apply via a dedicated online portal, ensuring transparency and digital record-keeping.
The plan not only supports farmers directly but also encourages agri-service providers who can rent out machinery to smaller landholders. This ensures that even farmers with limited resources can benefit from high-tech mechanisation.

International Partnerships
The Punjab government has also collaborated with international machinery suppliers to bring the latest technology to Pakistan. Machinery will be sourced from China, Türkiye, Italy, Japan, USA, Brazil, and Spain.
This wide network of global suppliers ensures farmers get world-class technology at subsidized and financed rates, something previously out of reach for the majority.

Challenges Ahead
While the programme is revolutionary, some challenges remain:
- Awareness: Farmers in rural areas may not be aware of how to apply through the digital portal.
- Training Needs: Farmers and operators need proper training to handle advanced machinery.
- Maintenance Issues: Ensuring spare parts and after-sales services remain available will be critical.
- Equitable Distribution: Care must be taken that small farmers get equal opportunities, not just large landlords.
A Vision for the Future
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has stated that the programme is not just about financing but about transforming Punjab’s agriculture into a high-tech sector. With a focus on transparency, inclusivity, and sustainability, this initiative is expected to play a central role in food security and rural development.
The High-Tech Farm Mechanisation Financing Programme could well become the blueprint for agricultural modernization across Pakistan, setting a new standard for government-backed farmer support.
